President Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem should not be a controversial one, it took courage and common-sense! The US embassy moving to Jerusalem shouldn’t be a big shock either, it has been of general consensus that the US government would eventually make this decision. There is always going to be controversy and conflict within Israel between the Jewish and Palestinian population, but there is no doubt that Jerusalem is the capital and therefore embassies must be in that location. It is vital that countries such as the UK and France openly support President Trump’s decision, and move their embassies to Jerusalem!
President Trump said that “our greatest hope is for peace” when addressing the Jerusalem crowd via video link at the ceremony. This was a key promise during President Trump’s election campaign, and it is only fair that he implemented that commitment.
The US embassy was moved from the Israeli coastal city of Tel Aviv, and the Jerusalem Mayor said that “President Trump decided to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish people, stand on the side of historical truth and do the right thing.”
White House officials have been quick to remind reporters that the President keeps his promises, and pointed out that Mr Trump is only doing what he was elected to do, and what the 3 previous Presidents failed to deliver on. The decision is widely supported across the religious and right-wing spectrum. Vice President Mike pence also praised the President’s decision, saying that “God decided Jerusalem was the capital of Israel more than 3,000 years ago during the time of King David”.
However, Palestinians have reacted with utter outrage, with many hundreds protesting in Gaza, which has led to over 50 deaths. The US government has sided with their Israeli allies in response to the deaths resulting from the protest. They have accused Gaza’s Hamas leaders of “intentionally and cynically” provoking Israel in an attempt at “gruesome propaganda”.
Nonetheless, the West helped the Jewish people settle in the 20th Century and all of the countries must follow President Trump and order their embassies to be moved to Jerusalem. Left-wing critics constantly moan about the disunity of the western liberal democracies, well now is a chance to show the world that our countries are united.
There is a very small chance of complete peace and co-operation between the Israelis and Palestinians, but Israel is one of a minute number of democratic countries in the Middle Eastern region. Prime Minister Theresa May and President Macron MUST act now and demonstrate to the region that we are not afraid to make bold decisions and stand with our allies.
